According to a legend from Santiago del Estero, Argentina, the Almamula being was originally a woman without morals, guilty of committing incest with her brother and father, and having sexual relations with the village priest.
As punishment for this she was cursed by God, who turned her into a lead-colored mule with fire in it's eyes and mouth. It is doomed to drag heavy chains wherever it goes as penance for it's sins.
It wanders at night in the thick of the mountains and haunts the outskirts of towns on stormy days. It is said that each dawn, its roamings end at the door of the nearest church, and as the next night falls it begins to aimlessly wander again, crying out in terrible pain. Its cry is terrible to hear and freezes the blood with fear.
Wow... This is a veritable Who's Who of Aural Films' heavy hitters. Wonderful concept, though at more than FIVE HOURS long it seems a bit unwieldy. For a timeless milestone on this theme (often used in circle dancing), check out Irene Papas & Vangelis's ODES (1979), the final track, "Menoussis." Paul Asbury Seaman
