about

El Perro Familiar

El Perro Familiar is a legend that emerged in the province of Tucumán, Argentina, During the mid-19th century sugar industry boom brought about by the expansion of railways.

During the boom, mill owners quickly became millionaires, whilst workers remained poor. The workers soon came the conclusion that the owners must have had signed demonic pacts in exchange for the wealth.

The owners of the mills were said to kept familiars that took the form of a large black dog with red eyes and hard hair like a boar. These familiars were kept hidden, usually in a cellar chimney. The mill owners would allow the familiar to roam free, feeding, on one night of the year. Anyone who had the misfortune to cross its path would be devoured and their soul consumed.
